Surprise Vacation

Because we remembered how much of a chore it is to travel with a baby, we decided to surprise the kids with a last minute trip to California before little brother is born. We secretly packed the car Thursday morning and told the kids to get ready for school. After driving past the school and faking a call from Legoland demanding that we come visit, we were headed to Carlsbad with two very excited and surprised kids.
It was our first trip to Legoland and Alan and Ellie loved it. We spent a day and a half at Legoland and the Sea Life Aquarium and an evening at Oceanside beach. On our last day we took the Balboa Park Trolley tour in San Diego and visited the Museum of Natural History.
We came home exhausted, but with lots of fun memories and WAAAY too many pictures. (=

The Window Show

Drawing on the beloved magnadoodle

Showing off freshly decorated Halloween cookies

Smiling before school

Wearing three ponytails for Crazy Hair Day at school
(she wasn't very disappointed that the silver glittery hairspray wouldn't come out of the can)

Today I heard yelling upstairs. I went up to see what was going on and saw Ellie standing by the window shouting an entire conversation to the little girls in the yard next to ours. The best part was that she was surrounded by a variety of masks, hats, and puppets from the costume closet. She was wearing a skeleton mask and fireman's hat. The girls were staring up at Ellie in the window, obviously being entertained by her assortment of looks. She was also holding a toy electric guitar with one hand and wearing a Wizard of Oz puppet on the other. I'm sure it was quite the show.
Wow, only a month and a couple of days until my due date! I can hardly believe the baby wil be here so soon. I already have a hospital bag packed and a special present bag full of snacks and surprises for Alan and Ellie (from the dollar section at Target.) Hopefully this will give them something fun to do while Ken and I are at the hospital and remind them that they are important too. Alan is extra excited to meet his baby brother and Ellie is warming up to the idea daily.
Today I've felt a particularly strong sense of gratitide for everything I've been blessed with. I'm so thankful for the gospel, which constantly provides perspective and peace of mind. I'm also especially grateful for sweet family and friends.
As usual, I jump too quickly from one topic to the next, and here I go again... I've discovered a folk singer that I really love to listen to. Her name is Eva Cassidy. For those of you who may not have heard her, she sounds a little bit like Etta James and Roberta Flack (two of my favorite artists.) Her album "Songbird" is nothing fancy and exciting, but is sooo relaxing and beautiful. I looked at her bio. and was saddened to read that she died of cancer at 33. You can check out samples of "Songbird" on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000006AKD/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img

Family Baby Shower

A couple of weeks ago we had a fun family baby shower! Emily and I recieved some much needed diapers and cute gifts. We also ate lots of tasty foods and played some creative games. Here are some pics:

Tums and vibrato

The other day we were playing a "getting to know you" game with my mom, brothers and sisters, and Alan and Ellie. My mom came up with the question, "What is your favorite thing to eat?" We all took turns guessing eachother's favorite foods. When it was Alan's turn, he pointed to me and confidently said, "You're favorite thing to eat is Tums, Mom." I had to laugh at that. He sees me eating them all day long and assumes that I love to chow down on them.

After I have the baby I look forward to never having to so much as look at another bottle of Tums again.

Last week Ellie asked, "I'm five now. When do I get to be in TV and movies?" I explained to her that it's really difficult to become a TV or movie star, but that when she was old enough, I'd take her to audition for a youth theater play. She seemed disappointed, but a while later I walked into the family room and saw her standing on the coffee table wearing her Dorothy costume. She was enthusiastically singing vibrato and trying out some fancy footwork. When she noticed she had an audience, she explained with determination that she was practicing to audition for the play. Over the last few days she's spent quite a bit of time on that coffee table polishing up her act. It's been pretty fun to watch!

8 years ago today

Eight years ago today I woke up early to the sound of nurses frantically talking in the hallway outside of my room at Tucson Medical Center. I could tell immediately that something was wrong. I heard one of them say she had a friend that worked in downtown New York and was worried. Another mentioned that her husband called her and told her what he'd seen on the news. I grabbed the remote control next to the hospital bed and flipped on the TV, just in time to see the second plane smash into the twin towers. I sat in shock for a moment before waking up Ken (who was sleeping soundly on a fold out couch next to me) and telling him to look at the TV screen. We watched in disbelief as people jumped from the top floors of the towers in a desperate attempt to escape the fire and heat. Every few minutes a new report came in detailing the attacks that had taken place in New York, as well as in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. When the nurses came in for the routine blood pressure checks, they seemed stunned; their voices hushed and movements slower than usual.

At the time I was 3o weeks pregnant with Alan. Because of severe bleeding and early contractions, I was hospitalized a week before. After tests were run, doctors discovered I had placenta previa. I was given shots to help develop Alan's lungs, in case he arrived prematurely. They put long, tight white socks on my legs to prevent blood clots and told me that I'd be staying for a while. Friends and family brought modeling clay, cross stitching, and drawing pads to keep me busy during the long hours in bed. Ken came every day after work to stay the night in the hospital with me and to push me around the hallways in a wheelchair. Sometimes, he'd even sneak a pizza slice in from my favorite pizzaria.

Two months before, we'd won an all expenses paid trip to Catalina Island. We'd never had the time or money for a honeymoon, so we were both estatic about the upcoming vacation. A stipulation on the prize was that there could be no date changes. We would be flying out early in the morning on Sept. 11th. As the getaway date approached and I remained hospitalized, I realized with disappointment that our vacation wasn't going to happen, yet I felt blessed that I was getting the medical care needed to keep Alan from arriving too early.

As Ken and I watched the devastating news early that morning, we talked about a lot of things. One of topics was that we felt fortunate that we hadn't gone on vacation. We knew that we'd be in flight at the time of the first attack and would probably end up stranded at LAX as all the confusion and chaos of the morning unfolded around us. We felt blessed to still be in Arizona, close to family and friends.

We finally turned off the news and Ken headed to work. I sat quietly and listened to the sounds of the hospital, thinking about how how my first baby would be born into a world that had suddenly changed; a world that didn't seem so safe anymore. I remember feeling terribly sad for all the victims and their families and angry at the hate-driven terrorists.

Over the next few days as I watched the country and other nations respond with strength and volunteerism, altruism and compassion, I realized that my son would be born into a world that was still filled with hope. Through word and deed The Savior promised, "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it." I knew that as long as my son knew this to be true, he could have hope too, and that was all the comfort I needed.

Crafts and cream puffs

I'm not known for carefully following directions, which makes me worse than average at crafts, cooking and assembling furniture. So, when I saw the sign-up sheet for our ward's most recent Fantastic Friday craft night I almost passed it to to the person next to me without even giving it a second glance. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to look at what crafts the sweet ladies of the ward would be making. After seeing the neat display photos, I decided that I just had to be involved in this particular craft night. So, I took Lana and Abby along with me and we enjoyed our evening of sanding, glueing and assembling. Also, the food table was a hungry pregnant lady's dream come true (four types of cream puffs anyone?) Here's some of the stuff that we made. I especially like the "Gordon B. Hinkley B's cubes" and have to give kudos to the crafty ladies that think up these projects. (=

Something special

Tonight I asked Alan (who is looking a little shaggy around the ears) what kind of haircut he wants to get.

His reply after thinking for a second: "Something special...something really, really special."

I had to laugh at the earnestness of his answer. Maybe I'll tell the lady at Super Cuts that's the look he's going for and see what she comes up with. (=

And on an unrelated topic, why do kids have to grow up so fast?! Darnit! I was looking through old photos on the computer today and just wanting to snuggle with the younger version of my kids right then and there. Ofcourse I still want to snuggle with them now that they're older, but if I could just hit rewind and spend one day with their little selves, I would love it. Here are some of my favorite photos of them from days gone by.
